Times are definetly changing. As people's working hours have extended and are no longer confined to 9 to 5, after work socialising takes preferences to heading straight back home, the retail world is finally hitting back.
24 Self Video, has just opened in Gladstone Street, allowing members to rent films when they want, Ben Walsh the owner of the store said "This retail concept brings together accessibility and total convenience for customers. Why should people be govened by the opening hours of stores, which increasingly has less relevance to their working and social lives.
The system works in a very similiar way to cashpoint machines. Customers swipe their membership card at the door to gain access, and then use the console to trawl for the film of their choice. Information about every film is there on the screen. And the console acts as a dispenser as well as a post box for returns.
For someone like myself, who is not entirely confident with some of this new technology, I found the console extremely easy to navigate around. Whoever designed the system plainly had the ordinary person on the street in mind.
People are always hungry to see the latest film releases and the rental costs will be a wonderful surprise, considerably cheaper than the more well known chains.
The question that remains puzzling is why this concept has taken so long to arrive in Ireland. 24 Self Videoo have been operating in Europe for 12 years and have have already opened over 2,000 outlets across the continent.
